General and Visceral Surgery

The Clinic and Outpatients Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery is one of the largest university surgical centres in Germany. The main areas of focus at the clinic are the treatment of malignant neoplasms of the digestive tract (gastrointestinal tract) as well as of hormone-producing (endocrine) organs. Other areas we focus on are liver, pancreas, small intestine and kidney transplantations as well as the treatment of inflammatory intestinal and pancreatic diseases. In addition to the broad range of conventional surgical techniques, all the procedures of minimal invasive surgery that are commonly used in general and visceral surgery are also carried out here.

Further areas of focus are the implantation of venous infusion pathways (port systems, feeding tubes), the placement of dialysis shunts and catheters, as well as the implementation of modern treatment concepts in the case of poorly healing wounds and pressure sores (decubitus ulcers).

The surgical section is equipped with the most up-to-date apparatus. Of particular note are the possibilities for the intraoperative sonogram diagnosis of tumours, metastases and vessels (Doppler / duplex sonography during an operation), intraoperative thermal treatment (radio frequency ablation, RFA) in the case of liver tumours, as well as the intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) of tumours. A highly competent intensive-care unit (Clinic and Outpatients Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Surgical Intensive-Care Medicine), as well as our own intensive-care observation units, ensure – by working in an interdisciplinary manner –both the success of any therapy and the successful elimination of pain following surgical procedures.
